Boiled eggs and asparagus

British asparagus season starts today on St George’s Day, and with it comes one of the most anticipated ingredients in the British food calendar. Fresh, local and only around for a short time, it’s a proper sign that spring has arrived, and something we look forward to serving every year at the Blue Bell.

When does asparagus season start?

Traditionally, the British asparagus season begins on 23rd April, St George’s Day, and runs through to 21st June, giving it a famously short season and making it one of the clearest signs that spring has arrived in the UK.

Because of that tight window, British asparagus has become one of the most anticipated seasonal ingredients each year.

Sourced through the New Forest

At the Blue Bell, we bring in our asparagus through the New Forest Fruit Company. Based on the south coast, they work closely with growers to supply early-season British asparagus, known for its freshness and quality.

It means what lands in our kitchen is crisp, full of flavour, and in season.

On the menu at the Blue Bell

You’ll find British asparagus featuring across our seasonal specials at the moment – from simple plates like asparagus and dippy eggs to lighter dishes like our asparagus pasta. These are the kinds of dishes that let the ingredient shine, using it at its best while it’s in season. As always, the approach is simple – fresh, seasonal, and all about the asparagus.

Worth catching while it lasts

With the season running for just a couple of months, British asparagus is one of those ingredients you’ve got to make the most of while it’s here.

St George’s Day marks the start — and there’s no better time to get stuck in.
