A landscape arboretum reflecting the colours of each changing season.

Winkworth Arboretum was created in the early 20th Century by Dr Wilfred Fox, a local doctor with a passion for preserving the wooded hillside near his home. He bequeathed it to the National Trust who have maintained Dr Fox’s passion for 60 years.

In that time, we have built up an internationally significant collection of over 1,000 different species of trees and shrubs – many of them rare. It has been awarded a Level 2 accreditation by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Programme, the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta at various levels of development, capacity, and professionalism.

Winkworth is a national and local treasure, perfect for visiting any time of the year as the landscape changes with the seasons. The collection provides an impressive  backdrop to a host of activities from family woodland walks, photographic and artistic inspiration, special children’s events such as half term trails and camping, and Heritage Open Days for preserving and maintaining the special history and natural habitat of the area.
